The art of shoe design
This book is written by Vangelis Doukakis with the aim of transferring the shoe design knowledge he acquired, during approximately forty years of factory production process. It is created entirely by himself, by using design, photo editing and paging software. Looking at the book cover, in addition to the synthesis he has created, the drawing diagrams, the digital photos and the designs, we can see one of his painting, in the lower left part. This artwork was carefully selected to remind us of his artistic origin.
The whole process of book creation was difficult. However, the combination of 4-5 different programs resulted in success and this is what makes the creator proud. This book is addressed to every potential or experienced designer, to every craft industry or shoe factory. The detailed measurements, the illustrated tables, the exact calculations and the useful design tips, result of personal research and accumulated work experience, make this book an invaluable asset for shoe design.
Analyzing the contents of the book we must state that all the work has been done on the 37 women’s size shoe. The multi-year experience of the designer sets rules that must be followed in order to have the appropriate design concerning lines, patterns and fit on the foot. Personal deposition of knowledge and data, not found in other books, make the strong characteristics of both the author and the book.
54 individual designs were created, for different types of shoes. They are classified into categories depending on the way and the particularity of their construction. For all of them, you can find the design bases in real dimensions, with all the distances and details, and the creation of all the pieces that compose the design, on a smaller scale though, due to space limitations.

Δουκάκης Βαγγέλης
Ο Βαγγέλης Δουκάκης γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στον Πειραιά. Στην παιδική του ηλικία φαίνεται ήδη η έφεση που έχει προς την ζωγραφική και το σχέδιο γενικότερα, από τα οποία χαρακτηρίζεται και αριστεύει στα σχολικά χρόνια.
Αρκετά χρόνια μετά εργάζεται σε εργοστάσια παπουτσιού για βιοποριστικούς λόγους και μαθαίνει πλέον σαν εργαζόμενος όλες τις φάσεις της κατασκευής του παπουτσιού. Σε ηλικία περίπου εικοσιπέντε ετών, και ενώ έχει κάνει ήδη δύο ατομικές εκθέσεις ζωγραφικής στον Πειραιά, αρχίζει να στρέφεται αποκλειστικά στο σχέδιο παπουτσιού. Τελειώνει με άριστα τη μοναδική κρατική σχολή σχεδιαστών που υπήρχε εκείνη την εποχή, γίνεται βοηθός σχεδιαστή για μικρό διάστημα και άμεσα ξεκινά να εργάζεται σαν πρώτος σχεδιαστής σε μεγάλα εργοστάσια. Η καλαισθησία των γραμμών του, η μαθηματική του σκέψη, η εμπειρία που είχε αποκτήσει στην κατασκευή των παπουτσιών καθώς και η φαντασία στη δημιουργία, ήταν τα στοιχεία εκείνα που του χάρισαν την επιτυχία και τον καθιέρωσαν ως έναν από τους καλλίτερους στο χώρο του.

Vangelis Doukakis was born and raised in Piraeus. His flair for painting and drawing -originated since his childhood- characterized him and made him excel throughout his school years. Several years later, he worked in shoe factories to make a living and as an employee, he got acquainted with all the stages of shoe making. In his mid-twenties, as he had already presented two solo painting exhibitions in Piraeus, he started focusing exclusively on shoe design. He graduated with honors from the single one-year state designers’ school of the time, he then became an assistant designer for a short period and immediately after, he started working as a senior designer in big shoe factories. The elegance of his lines, his mathematical thinking, the valuable experience he had gained in shoe manufacturing, as well as his imaginary creativity were those elements that forged his success and established him as one of the best shoe designers.
